A Tragic Shift a Single Year Has Made in the United States
Twelve months back, the situation was entirely distinct. Before the national election, thoughtful residents could acknowledge the nation's significant faults – its injustices and disparity – but they could still identify it as the US. A democratic nation. A place where the rule of law meant something. A country led by a dignified and upright official, even with his elderly years and declining health.
These days, this autumn, many of us barely recognize the nation we live in. Persons believed to be unauthorized foreigners are rounded up and pushed into vans, sometimes blocked from fair treatment. The eastern section of the White House – is being destroyed to build a lavish dance hall. Donald Trump is harassing his adversaries or supposed enemies and requesting the justice department transfer a huge total of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are dispatched across metropolitan centers with deceptive justifications. The defense headquarters, rebranded the Department of War, has practically rid itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny as it spends possibly reaching nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Universities, attorney offices, media outlets are yielding due to presidential intimidation, and billionaires are regarded as members of the royal family.
“The US, just months before its quarter-millennium anniversary as the planet's foremost free society, has tipped over the brink into authoritarianism and extremism,” a noted author, stated this past summer. “Finally, faster than I imagined possible, it occurred here.”
Each day begins to new horrors. And it is challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – how severely declined we have become, and the speed at which it unfolded.
However, we understand that Trump was properly voted in. Following his deeply disturbing previous administration and even after the cautions linked to the knowledge of Project 2025 – even after the leader directly said publicly he would act as an autocrat only on the first day – sufficient voters selected him rather than his Democratic opponent.
As terrifying as the current reality may be, it's more daunting to realize that we’re only nine months into this administration. What will three more years of this deterioration leave us? And suppose the three years becomes a more extended duration, because there is not anyone to restrain this ruler from deciding that another term is necessary, maybe for national security reasons?
Granted, not everything is hopeless. We will have midterm elections in 2026 that could bring a different governmental control, if Democrats regain either chamber of parliament. We have elected officials who are striving to exert a degree of oversight, such as Democratic congressmen that are launching an investigation concerning the try to cash appropriation from the justice department.
And a national vote three years from now could start us down the road to recovery just as the previous vote put us on this disappointing trajectory.
There exist countless citizens demonstrating in urban areas throughout communities, as they did recently during anti-authority protests.
An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the dormant powerhouse of America is rising”, just as it did after the Communist witch-hunt era in the 1950s or throughout anti-war demonstrations or throughout the seventies crisis.
During those times, the listing ship ultimately corrected itself.
He claims he understands the signals of that revival and observes it occurring now. As support, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the extensive, cross-party resistance against a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal refusal by journalists to sign the defense department’s demands they only publish authorized information.
“The slumbering entity perpetually exists asleep before some venality turns extremely harmful, an specific act so contemptuous of the common good, specific cruelty so disruptive, that it is compelled but to awaken.”
It’s an optimistic take, and I appreciate his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will turn out correct.
Meanwhile, the big questions persist: will the nation return to normalcy? Is it possible to restore its status internationally and its adherence to the rule of law?
Or do we need to admit that the national endeavor worked for a while, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?
My negative thoughts suggests that the second option is true; that everything could be finished. My optimistic spirit, nevertheless, advises me that we have to attempt, by any means possible.
Personally, working in journalism analysis, that means pushing media professionals to commit, more thoroughly, to their duty of scrutinizing authority. For others, it might involve participating in political races, or coordinating protests, or developing approaches to defend electoral access.
Less than a year ago, we lived in a very different place. In the future? Or after another term? The truth is, we are uncertain. The only option is try to continue fighting.
