Analysis Finds Synthetic Compounds in Food Supply Creating a Health Burden of $2.2tn a Year

Experts have sounded an urgent alarm, stating that numerous synthetic chemicals integral to contemporary farming are driving higher rates of malignancies, neurodevelopmental disorders, and infertility, while simultaneously harming the basis of worldwide agriculture.

The annual economic burden attributed to exposure to compounds like phthalates, BPA, pesticides, and "forever chemicals" is valued at as much as $2.2 trillion—a staggering sum comparable to the aggregate income of the world's top one hundred publicly traded corporations, as per a fresh analysis.

Additionally, most ecosystem degradation is still unpriced. But even a narrow accounting of environmental effects—factoring in agricultural losses and the cost of complying with water safety standards for these chemicals—implies an extra cost of $640 billion. The report also cautions of serious demographic implications, finding that if current rates of contact to endocrine disruptors remain, there could be from 200 million and 700 million fewer births globally between 2025 and 2100.

A Stark "Warning" from Medical Professionals

A lead author on the report, a respected paediatrician and academic of global public health, described the conclusions a "blunt wake-up call".

"Humanity really has to become aware and do something about the issue of synthetic chemicals," he said. "In my view that the issue of synthetic pollution is every bit as grave as the challenge of climate change."

He noted a alarming shift in childhood health issues over his long career. Whereas diseases from infections have declined, there has been an "astonishing increase" in non-communicable diseases, with growing contact to thousands of synthetic chemicals being a "major cause."

The Ubiquitous Chemicals in Our Food

The report particularly focuses on the effects of four families of artificial chemicals endemic in worldwide food production:

• Phthalates and BPA: Often used as plastic agents, they are present in wrapping and single-use gloves used in food preparation.
• Pesticides: They underpin large-scale agriculture, with huge single-crop farms spraying large volumes on crops to control weeds, and numerous foods being sprayed after harvesting to preserve shelf life.
• Pfas: Employed in greaseproof paper, popcorn tubs, and packaging, these persistent chemicals have built up in the environment to the point of entering the food chain through contamination.

All of these chemical groups have been linked to significant harms, including endocrine disruption, multiple cancers, birth defects, cognitive disability, and obesity.

A Largely Unchecked Issue with Hidden Consequences

Public and ecological exposure to synthetic chemicals has surged since the 1950s, with global manufacturing growing over two hundred times. Today, there are more than 350,000 synthetic chemicals on the international market.

Alarmingly, unlike medicines, there are few regulations to ensure the safety of commercial chemicals prior to they are released onto widespread use, and inadequate tracking of their impacts once deployed. Several have later been discovered to be highly harmful to people, wildlife, and ecosystems.

One expert voiced particular concern about chemicals that damage the developing brains and endocrine-disrupting compounds. The researcher stressed that the chemicals studied in the report are "merely the beginning," representing a small number of substances for which robust safety data exists.

"The thing that scares me the most is the many thousands of chemicals to which we're all subjected every day about which we know nothing," he confessed. "Until one of them causes something blatantly obvious, like children to be born with severe deformities, we're going to go on unthinkingly exposing ourselves."
