The rate of temperature increase in New England makes it the most rapidly warming area of the contiguous United States, as per the research. The rate of its warming has apparently accelerated notably in the last half-decade.

"The temperature is not only increasing, it's speeding up," explained a primary researcher on the study. "It's really accelerated in the past few years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is shifting in a new direction, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."

The analysis places the north-eastern US among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, together with the Arctic and parts of Europe and China. "New England is now heading towards being like the American South," the scientist noted.

For the study, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on day and night temperatures and snowpack dating back to 1900. The review covered the six states of the New England region.

They discovered that New England has warmed by an average of 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the global average, with the planet heating by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the comparable timeframe.

"This represents extremely rapid heating, which is concerning," said the researcher.

A major cause for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be shifts in the North Atlantic. The world's oceans are taking in the vast majority of the surplus thermal energy captured by greenhouse gases.

In the region near New England, an increase of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is pushing warmer water into the Gulf of Maine, concentrating heat along the coastline that is then pushed further inland by prevailing winds.

"The excess heat from climate change is being held in the sea like a massive storage unit," explained the researcher. "This is now being released into the air and New England is a recipient of that heat."

Impacts on Life and Weather

Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has suffered severe weather shocks in recent years, including enormous floods and extended dry spells.

The increasing temperatures endangers iconic elements of local culture:

  • Maple syrup production is facing challenges by changing climate conditions.
  • Cold-weather activities are disrupted; an hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been canceled or moved repeatedly due to a lack of ice.
  • Winter tourism have struggled because of insufficient snow.

"I reside just north of Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to skate on the local ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That tradition has largely vanished from large parts of southern New England."
