From Praise to Fury: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the limited disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.

Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric

Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the censorship procedure.

Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections

While the former president's identity and image are visible in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency.

“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.

Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release

But, some rightwing pundits and former President allies came out strongly behind the administration.

The release—originating from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.

But some do not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative voices to launch the offensive.

“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”

Former President Campaign Issues Statement

Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.

Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued

Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.

Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical folders of materials that contained no new data.
